NOTICES FROM THE BOARD
  1. Our Las Vegas Region is rich with events this year. You should scroll upward and look at the list in the yellow block again. There's something for everyone.
  2. For your complete information, the full Board for 2016 is listed down near the bottom of this Newsletter. You may call any Board member if you have questions. Many of them have some idea about what is going on.

Editor's Thoughts:

1. If you plan to attend the Porsche Classic Brand launch party on March 30, you'd better RSVP tight away. See the announcement just below for details.

2. We've a rare opportunity to see Paul Bernardo's collection of Porsches and Porsche-bilia on Friday March 25, but an RSVP is required. See the March 25 notice below.

3. It looks like we have a new hit series in process.... the Nevada State Parks Tour (The "Expedition").
Our report on last Sunday's trip to the Big Bend of the Colorado State Park appears below.

4. We have a new "Rally Writer" in the LVR, Scott Hatcher. Scott has created a fun drive with simple (maybe?) questions, and presents the Gimmick Rally on April 2. Take it from your Editors, this one has  a REALLY unusual twist, but is truly simple and entertaining.

5.  Most people don't know this, but it's possible to read something you don't agree with on the internet and simply move on with your life.

Now on to the Coming (or just-happened) Events

March 13:  Great Nevada State Parks Expedition Report

BIG BEND OF THE COLORADO STATE RECREATION AREA

15 cars and 26 LVRPCA members embarked upon this adventure. Some folks had not driven down Las Vegas Blvd to Jean nor across Rte. 164 thru Nipton to Searchlight through the Joshua Tree Forrest. Most seemed to enjoy the beauty of the drive.

Sadly, no one stopped to make an offer on the towns of Nipton or Cal Nev Ari. We did come up with a plan though to buy them both and then get a grant from Uncle Sugar for a mag lev, high speed train between them to cut down our commute time. Once we saw Cal Nev Ari we quickly changed our minds!!

We think it is safe to say that all of us were really impressed with the facilities at the Park and the size of Laughlin. In the summer we could only imagine how many boats and sunbathers there would be at that beautiful spot. Laughlin was much larger than most of us had envisioned. It is a pretty nice place.

The boat trip got off to a rocky start when we discovered that the phone number they gave us to call in the final tally of folks going on the river cruise was the corporate number only manned M-F from 10:06 to 10:15 every other day. Thankfully, Doug and Jan Pierce had been to the Park earlier on a reconnoitering mission so they went ahead and sorted things out for us. Good thing as the boat was sold out!! 24 of us enjoyed a wonderful 90 minute narrated cruise while enjoying chips and salsa and those delicious prime rib sliders. The water was swiftly flowing and crystal clear. There were numerous wave runners and boats enjoying skimming across the 55 degree water. It was a very relaxing way to spend part of an afternoon.

All in all another successful adventure in our Great Nevada State Park Expedition.

March 16 (Wednesday): Third Thursday Social (yeah, we know, it's wasn't Thursday)

March's TTS was Wednesday at Sammy's Restaurant and Bar in Henderson.  Knowing that Thursday was St. Patrick's Day and most popular Pubs and other establishments worthy of a Third Thursday gathering would be oversubscribed with revelers, we opted for a Wednesday this month.

We had a great group of 37 members who enjoyed the drinks and food whilst relaxing and enjoying each others' company and thoughts on the important and not-so-important issues of the day.

Thanks to John Burrows, our newest contributing photographer, for the above pictures.

March 25 (Friday): Porsches and Pancakes - Special Edition: "RSVP REQUIRED"
Drive to Logandale for a tour of Paul Bernardo's Porsche museum and collection.

Last summer, a small number of us were surprised at our Overton breakfast by a spur-of-the-moment invitation by Paul Bernardo to see his museum and collection of Porsche things at his home in Logandale.

This time, we'll journey to Logandale for lunch at Paul's home, probably a cookout of brats and burgers, and a tour of his collection.

Paul's very large steel building contains many interesting cars, and hundreds, maybe even thousands, of Porsche memorabilia, parts, literature, and just plain fascinating stuff. He even has a Porsche tractor. And a new 356 (that's not a typo). And a great collection of old (ancient?) motorcycles.

We'll meet under the big sign at the Henderson Fiesta Casino, at 9:30 and roll-out at 10:00. We'll drive the North Shore Drive along Lake Mead to Redstone, where we'll stop for photos and whatever, and then continue on to Logandale, which is just a few miles beyond Overton. We'll get there about 11:30.

Join us for motoring while monitoring of the temperature gauge (or oil pressure gauge if that's what you do), and then socializing, eating, and viewing. If you plan to come with us, PLEASE send an RSVP e-mail to Phil at philreese356@gmail.com.  We need to know how much food and drink to buy. Those who arrive without having RSVP'd may not eat. Nuff said.

For more information, contact Salomon Braun at sbraun5@cox.net, or at 702-423-2677; or Phil Reese at 702-478-6911, or at philreese356@gmail.com

April 2 (Saturday): Gimmick Rally

Scott Hatcher has come up with an unusual twist on the description of a "course" or "route" for a Gimmick Rally. There will be about a 2-hour driving adventure... no required speeds or timing, a nice drive, with a number of interesting (possibly tricky) questions along the "route" to answer.

Start is at Mountain Crest Park at 4701 N. Durango Dr. (corner of Lone Mountain and Durango). We'll gather for a drivers' meeting and tension-relieving procedures at 9:30, and the first car will get underway at 10:00.

Bring a pencil/pen and a clipboard (and your car). As with the previous fall gimmick rallies, there is no hiking or para-gliding involved.

The finish will be at a restaurant offering lunch, where amazing prizes will be awarded to the winner(s).

There is no cost other than for what you order for lunch.

For info, contact Scott Hatcher at shatcher.hcc@earthlink.net or at 702-525-8991

April 3 (Sunday): Lions Club Black Mountain Car Show

This is a charity event being supported by the LVR. The entry fee for the first 10 Porsches to arrive at the show site has been pre-paid by the Red Rock Concours. The organizers of the Black Mountain show have agreed to support the Red Rock Concours with entries by their associated Classic Car Club.

This is our most recent attempt at inter-club cooperation to support the Red Rock Concours.

The site is at the Skyline Casino at 1741 N. Boulder Hwy, in Henderson (near Sunset and Boulder Hwy.). The show time is 9 am to 3 pm. Plan to arrive a bit before 9:00.

For information contact Teresa Hancox at 702-592-6214, or Mike Dugan at 1-925-470-7706

April 6 (Wednesday): LVR Board Meeting at Gaudin Porsche

Held at Gaudin Porsche at 6:00 pm. Board meetings are open to all members. We encourage you to attend. the discussions are lively, and are the heart of how the Las Vegas Region is run.

A light dinner is served; the Gaudin Carrera Cafe has lately been outdoing itself in preparing wonderful dinners.

At the April Board meeting, we'll be working on finalizing details for the 2016 season DE events at Spring Mountain, as well as for the remaining 2016 drives, trips, tours, and events. A member-tailored tech session will also be planned. These discussions are what keeps the LVR running smoothly and offering a variety of activities for members.

For info, call Mike Hill at myevo8isfast@yahoo.com, Salomon Braun at 702-423-2677, or Mike Dugan at 1-925-470-7706.

April 10 (Sunday): Members' Breakfast (2nd Sunday this month)

The date of the usual 1st Sunday Members' Breakfast at the Red Rock Country Club has been changed to April 10 due to the Lions Club Car Show on April 3, in which many of us will participate (see above for the April 3 notice). It does, however, remain at 9:00 am at the Red Rock Country Club

As usual, we will have the entire entry circle for parking to ourselves.  The dining room is spacious and quiet, the made to orders eggs and omelets are terrific, and the buffet seems endless.  With warmer weather here, many will take advantage of the outdoor patio after breakfast to sit around and discuss the meaning of life and solve world problems.

SPECIAL EVENT! We'll have a professional photographer present to take pictures of LVR members, the event, and members' cars, as well as members with their cars. We'll use the pictures on our Facebook page, on our web site, in this Newsletter, and maybe for the Red Rock Concours. The photographer will take photos at our direction. If you have a Porsche shirt or jacket, consider wearing them. The photographer will have a special filter to make all of us look beautiful and handsome.

The cost is still only $12 per person.  Cinnamon rolls included, made-to-order omelets and eggs, plus light and fluffy pancakes.  It can't get any better.  We pay at the entrance to the dining room, as we enter.

April 23-24: (Saturday and Sunday): Tonopah weekend at the Mizpah

Those who participated in the 2015 Tonopah Weekend will fondly remember the 5-Star "Mizpah" hotel in Tonopah, a jewel in the middle of nowhere (so to speak).  It has two 5-Star restaurants and a luxurious and quiet lounge that begs for conversation and reminisces.

The Mizpah Hotel has finally regained its 5-star rating after our visit last year, and after intense negotiations has agreed to let us return for another overnight stay.

This is a "Pay On Your Own" Event.  You'll have to make your own reservations at the Mizpah ... phone 1-775-482-3030.  Be sure to let them know you're with the Porsche club.

We'll meet at the IHOP located on Cheyenne Ave. at the 95 (6870 W. Cheyenne Ave.) at 9:30 am Saturday morning for a roll-out at about 10:00 (You can have breakfast at the IHOP if you arrive a bit earlier).

Once again, we'll drive through Beatty on Saturday, with a stop at the candy store (they sell about every variety on candy imaginable.... ask somebody), and then on up to Tonopah for partying and eating.

An additional amenity is the Mizpah business center (shown below).  There is an interesting history of the Mizpah at: Mizpah Hotel History

And, if you can stand the excitement, link this trip to the next leg of our Nevada State Park Expeditions, this time to the Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park . . . read on

BERLIN ICHTHYOSAUR STATE PARK --

On Wed, March 9, the LV Review Journal ran an article on the Ichthyosaur. Scientists originally believed that the Ichthyosaur after living in the earth's oceans for 150 million years declined over tens of millions of years having been outcompeted by other fearsome predators. Now the belief is that the earth was warming rapidly, approaching the hottest in the past 250 million years, triggering strong fluctuations in sea levels and temperatures causing large swaths of the sea floor to become depleted of oxygen necessary for animals to live.

What is an Ichthyosaur? Picture a dolphin the size of an 18 wheeler. They were fast swimmers, breathing air, giving birth of live babies with large eyes to spot prey deep underwater. They had muscular flippers and vertical flukes like a shark. 37 of them have been cataloged in the Park we are going to visit.
The Park is 340 miles north of LV. We are combining this tour with the overnight tour to the Mizpah hotel in Tonopah on April 23 & 24. We'll meet on Sat, April 23 at 9:30 AM at the IHOP located on Cheyenne Ave at the 95 Hwy (6870 Cheyenne Ave). Departure is planned for 10:00AM. A comfort break is planned for the Candy Store in Beatty. Dinner that evening will be in one of the Mizpah hotel's great restaurants.
Remember you must make your own hotel arrangements. The Mizpah phone number is 1-775-482-3030. Be sure to ask for the Porsche Club rate.

After breakfast on Sunday, April 24, we will depart for the 130 mile drive to the Park at 8:30 AM. We should arrive around 10:30 allowing some time to explore the old mining town of Berlin before embarking on our private, 40 minute tour of the fossil beds at noon. Those wishing to head back to LV should plan on leaving shortly after the tour is complete for the 340 drive. Those planning on staying a second night in Tonopah, will have more time to explore the Park before heading back to Tonopah for a leisurely dinner with our fellow Club members. Travel home on Monday is at your convenience.

May 20 - 22 (Friday - Sunday): Grand Canyon Train Ride Trip.

We've arranged for a drive, stay, eat, ride-a-train, see the Grand Canyon weekend for LVR members.

This involves a 3-day, 2-night trip to Williams Arizona, 2 nights in the Williams Grand Canyon Railway Hotel, a train ride to and from the Grand Canyon, a bus tour of the South Rim, and all meals.
(editor's note:  If that is the train out front, it may be a short ride.)

Williams is an old and genuine Route 66 town. The Williams Railway Hotel is the original train station, recently completely refurbished as a very nice hotel.

The trip is set up through Triple A (AAA), with a discount for all AAA members.

Altogether, the trip includes:
  • Two nights (Friday and Saturday) in a Deluxe Room (two queens) at the Williams Railway Hotel;
  • Two dinners at the Hotel (Friday and Saturday nights);
  • Two breakfasts at the Hotel (Saturday and Sunday mornings);
  • To and from the South Rim on the Grand Canyon Railway in Luxury Parlor Car or the Luxury Dome car (pick one; Linda has brochures). The train ride is a little over two hours each way. Saturday morning, in the Parlor Car, fresh fruit, pastries, coffee, and juice are served. On the return trip, complimentary snacks and a cash bar are available. Entertainment and train robbers are featured on the return trip.
Grand
Grand Canyon Rail Trip
  • A 1-1/2-hour guide-narrated motorcoach tour of the South Rim, with buffet lunch included.
Williams is about a 4-hour drive from Las Vegas. We would leave Friday late morning for the trip. Hotel check-in time is 3:00 pm. No children are allowed at our price at the Hotel or on the train in the Parlor or Luxury Dome cars.
All participants (at least one member of a couple) must be AAA members; a $56 fee to join AAA if you are not a AAA member. The AAA fee is far less than the discount we have arranged. A $20 gift card is included for spending at the Hotel gift shop.

The cost for two persons for all of the above is $1001.21. The Grand Canyon Railroad has already raised the price once (to $1001) and the Triple-A rep has informed us of another pending price increase. Another price increase may result in the LVR withdrawing from promotion of this event. Stay tuned for more info next week. If you don't have a National Parks Pass, the charge is $30 higher. Price is for two persons. There are lower-priced rooms at the Hotel as well.

Your own individual arrangements must be made through Mr. Terry Burgess at AAA, 702-727-2825 or Terry.Burgess@goAAA.com We suggest doing this soon, since this is a VERY popular trip. The drop-dead for this offer is March 30, 2016, and we're not sure that it won't be sold out before that date.

Obviously, other hotels and restaurants are available in Williams. The Saturday morning train departs at 9:30 from the train station, and departs the Grand Canyon to return to the hotel at 3:30 pm. You can make any arrangements you desire, other than the AAA trip described above.

For additional info, contact Linda Reese, at 702-478-6911, or at linandphilabuster@gmail.com
and watch this section for more video and pictures of the area and tour in the coming months.

On the road --  DIY Tools

A Few Fun
Truths About Tools

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive parts not far from the object we are trying to hit.
MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on boxes containing seats, headliners, and floor mats.
ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning steel Pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age, but it also works great for drilling mounting holes in fenders just above the brake line that goes to the rear wheel.
PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads.
HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the original sin principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.
VISE-GRIPS: Used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.
OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your garage on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside a brake drum you're trying to get the bearing race out of.
WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older Porsches, they are now used mainly for impersonating that 15mm or 19mm socket you've been searching for the last 15 minutes.
DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your coffee across the room, splattering it against that freshly painted part you were drying.
WIRE WHEEL: Cleans rust off old bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprint whorls and hard-earned guitar calluses in about the time it takes you to say, "Ouch...."
HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering your Porsche to the ground after you have installed your new front disk brake setup, trapping the jack handle firmly under the front fender.
EIGHT-FOOT LONG DOUGLAS FIR 2X4: Used for levering your Porsche upward off a hydraulic jack.
TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters.

At the Track

March 16-19: 12 Hours of Sebring

Qualifying:  GTLM. After scoring pole position in 2014 and 2015, the #911 Porsche 911 RSR fielded by Patrick Pilet started the 12 Hours of Sebring this year in seventh position while the #912 RSR piloted by Frédéric Makowiecki started in tenth place.

GTD. The best-placed Porsche 911 GT3 R placed fourth in qualifying.  The new customer racer from Weissach is campaigned by the Team Seattle/Alex Job Racing team.

Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, Head of Porsche Motorsport: "The qualifying didn't turn out quite as we'd expected and shows just how strong our opposition is and how tight the GTLM field is."

GTLM . . . Porsche 911 RSR finishes third at Florida long distance classic.  The race went about the same as qualifying as Porsche scored a third place finish in the GTLM class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in the 911 RSR piloted by Bamber, Makowieck, and Christensen.  The sister RSR driven by Pilet, Tandy, and Estre did not make it to the flag. While running in the lead, a collision resulted in them having to park their 911 RSR resulting in a tenth place finish.

When severe weather with torrential rain, thunder and lightning broke out over the storied race track three hours after the start, the long distance classic was stopped for more than two hours.  Before rain began to flood large stretches of the circuit, the Porsche 911 RSR made the most of the situation.  Nick Tandy took over the wheel of the #911 racer from Patrick Pilet, and in deteriorating conditions had moved into the lead after 56 laps.  Earl Bamber battled his way up the order to second place in the number 912. After 66 laps, the race was red-flagged due to the weather turmoil and the flooded racetrack, and the field was directed back to the pits. At this time, the two Porsche held positions one and two.

A GREAT DAY OF RACING DESPITE THE WEATHER
A GREAT DAY OF RACING DESPITE THE WEATHER
As the track dried and the race resumed, 911 RSR turned consistently quick lap times amongst the strong GTLM frontrunners. Kévin Estre, the teammate of Nick Tandy and Patrick Pilet, held the lead after seven hours, with Michael Christensen running in third in the sister car.  But shortly afterwards, after 116 laps, the leading 911 RSR was out: While fighting for the lead, Kévin Estre had collided with a Corvette in Turn 13, ended up in a tyre barrier and retired. Michael Christensen inherited the lead spot, but under dry conditions was unable to maintain the lead. Frédéric Makowiecki took the wheel of the 911 RSR at the next pit stop while running fourth. The Frenchman quickly made up a position, and Earl Bamber did the rest: Until shortly before the flag he was running in second place, but was ultimately flagged off in third just five seconds off the leader.

GTD. . . Porsche GT3 R finishes fourth and fifth.  Team Seattle/Alex Job Racing GT3 R also finished in the same spot they started . . . fourth.  The other GT3 R finished fifth.

After the Race.  Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, Head of Porsche Motorsport: "We can be very pleased with third place today. The race was tumultuous with many caution phases and a break of more than two hours - it was difficult for everyone. Unfortunately we too were a victim of the rain. We lost our leading 911 RSR - that's a real shame. The race was tough to the finish. To finish five seconds down on the leader is not bad at all. The entire team did everything they could under the most difficult conditions. Our pit stops were good and so was our strategy. But sadly it still wasn't quite enough in the end."  But the season is still young.
