But first .   .  . "Picture of the Week" . . .  Submitted by Roger Greene
We had a great Holiday Weekend. Hope you did too!
When the going gets hot (i.e. temps in Vegas are regularly above 100), the hot get going to a better clime.  The Greenes headed to Palm Beach Florida and the Atlantic Ocean for some recreational fishing.  Here is an 85 pound Sailfish that took 45 minutes to land.  Looks like a lot of Friday Fish Frys are in the future.

If you have a picture you believe would be of interest to the region's members, submit it to Jim Miller at: quais64@me.com

Editor's Thoughts

1. In watching the nearly-continuous discussions and debates having to do with the current political scene, in which the talking heads endlessly throw numbers and opinions at each other, it would be good to keep in mind that 72.6% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

2. Check out Before we Go below for events outside our region.  There are Concours, an Autocross, and many drives at stunning locations with exceptional roads.
_________________________________________________________________________________

  1. We spoke last week about how organizers of our LVR events almost always experience problems with knowing how many plan to participate. We gave you a couple of examples where knowing the names of the LVR members participating would have been very useful.
We also told you to expect in the future to be asked to RSVP to the organizers if you plan to attend an event. The Board discussed a number of ideas about how to obtain attendance data, many of which involved some cost. Cheap SOG's that we are, the Board decided to start with a simple and free approach. So, this week, we're asking you to RSVP to Mike Matthis if you plan to attend the July Third Thursday Social (aka TTS) on the 21st. The details, including Mike's e-mail address, are in the notice below.

Think you can handle it? Please do, a simple system that works would be great.

2. Members' Breakfast Info: At the request of the Red Rock Country Club, we have set the Breakfast dates for the next year: Here you go...
Aug 7, 2016; Sep 4; Oct 2; Nov 6; Dec 4; Jan 8, 2017; Feb 12; Mar 5; Apr 2; May 7; Jun 4.

Now how many people know where they're going to have breakfast a year from now? Now YOU do.

3. For your complete information, the full Board for 2016 is listed down near the bottom of this Newsletter. You may call any Board member if you have questions. Many of them frequently have some idea about what's going on.

July 10 (that was today): Members' Breakfast

Smallish crowd (more cinnamon buns for the editor) this being summer and all; rough count 40 to 45. Some newbies too, who appeared to be enjoying themselves.

So instead of a people picture, we've included a shot of the omelette station. You should see these guys flip eggs. And, as a matter of fact, you can. Come to the next breakfast, on August 7. See the notice below.

July 21: Third Thursday Social, 5:30 pm

This month, the TTS will be at the Black Mountain Grill, at 11021 S. Eastern Ave. in Henderson.
(Ph: 702-990-0990).

We've arranged a separate room for Happy Hour  (BTW, why limit happy to one hour?), with plenty of room for milling around and socializing, with dinner afterwards for those who would like to in the Grill's separate dining room.

If you plan to attend, please send a brief RSVP to Mike Matthis by e-mail mrpanther7@aol.com

July/August:  State Park Expedition
Cave Lake and Ward Charcoal Oven State Parks
Check back here weekly for dates and departure information
Roger Greene,
State Park Expedition Leader
Cave Lake State Park - Summer
Ward Charcoal Ovens
If you have participated in each of our park tours so far you have visited 10 parks. Our next tour will take us to Ely and the Cave Lake and Ward Charcoal State Parks.  We will take one way up to Ely and follow a different route home.  It will be 275 miles up and 250 back.  Plan on 5-5.5 hours driving time up and 4.5-5 hours back. This will be an overnight trip. More on lodging in a later missive.
Cave Lake State Park - Winter
There are 11 miles of graded road to access the Ward Charcoal Ovens. Sporty Porsches will be fine. I am going to try and find a weekend in late July or early August for this adventure to take advantage of getting out of LV's heat for a couple of days and maybe even an outdoor BBQ.

If some of you wanted to participate in the Caliente 5 State Park tour but were unable to, we will go right by four of the five parks and if enough folks like, we will make brief stops at those five parks so you can, at least, get a glimpse of them and get your Passport stamped. We anticipate this will add two hours to the travel time going up to Ely. If you would like to do this it is imperative that you let me know before the day of departure, not at the Drivers' meeting (contact me at rcgreene1@yahoo.com)

If you have never been to Ely it is an interesting place. It sits at an elevation of around 6,600 feet so it will be much cooler than here in the Valley.  If you are a railroad buff, Ely will be of special interest. There is a large complex of railroad equipment, an old station/depot and you can become a licensed steam or diesel electric locomotive engineer. Dinner trains are also available.

Ely is the home of the Silver State Classic Challenge Open Road Race, 90 miles at the speed of your choice. It is held twice a year in May and September.  Speed classes range from 90MPH up to 150MPH. The competitor closest to his/her target average speed is the winner. There is also an Unlimited class where you go as fast as you can. The more safety equipment you have on the car, the faster the class you can enter. By the way, the Unlimited record is 217MPH average speed for the 90 miles.

Lehman Caves
In addition, Great Basin National Park is 60 miles east of Ely on Rte. 50, the loneliest road in the world. Great Basin is the home of Wheeler Peak, one of two 13,000 foot mountains in Nevada. Wheeler Peak has an impressive headwall above a large glacial cirque, large moraines, and an active rock glacier.  Despite climate change, the top of the mountain is covered by deep snow most of the year.  If you visit Great Basin do not miss touring the Lehman Caves. They are spectacular. With all there is to see and do in the Ely area you may want to consider staying a second night.
"The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal amount of time."
Henry David Thoreau

Wheeler Peak, Jeff Davis, & Glacier Cirque

Remember, you can go to www.parks.nv.gov and find information on Cave Lake and the Charcoal Ovens.

After the debacle of trying to meet at the Speedway during the EDC and not knowing who was planning on attending, we are asking that if you are planning to attend this event RSVP to Roger at the email address below and be sure to include your cell phone number. Be sure to also indicate if you are interested in visiting four of the five parks from the Caliente trip.  We will not go out to Beaver Dam as there is very little to do there unless you want to drive on VERY dusty roads and hike on some VERY steep trails.

RSVP to:  rcgreene1@yahoo.com

August 7: Members' Breakfast

We have the entire entry circle for parking to ourselves; it's quite a Porsche show itself. The dining room is spacious and quiet (except for the frequent spirited discussion). The socializing is lots of fun.

We have our own coffee bar in our part of the dining room. (Talk about accommodating!)

It can't get any better. It's your own fault if you miss it.

For information, contact Mike Dugan at mduganre@gmail.com or 1-925-470-7706

August 21 (Sunday): Drive to Mt. Charleston

We'll have a drive to the new "Gateway to the Spring Mountains" Park. We have reserved the picnic area. Parking is really great for our Porsches. We can park ten feet apart and still have plenty of room. The old lady with the beat-up '82 Buick will not be attending or parking, so not to worry.

Our Drive Chairman is arranging for the Taco Man or the Taco Lady to provide lunch.

There will be a scenic drive after
the picnic, weather permitting.
Starting point, time, and cost (if any) will be announced next week (probably).

Stay tuned. As they say..... mark your calendar.

For info (later) contact Salomon Braun at sbraun5@cox.net or 702-423-2677

On the Road:  The 7th Annual Mammoth Mountain High-Alpine Tour
Adapted from The July 2017 Circular
Newsletter of the Sierra Nevada Region
by Craig Kugler, President
The 7th Annual Mammoth High Alpine Tour, was organized by Sierra Nevada Region (SNR) member and Mammoth resident Mark Coronado and it's grown from less than a dozen cars in 2009 into a multi-regional event with 93 cars participating this year.  The dates were June 17 - 19.

A  casual dinner on Friday evening was followed by a 7:00 pm Meet & Greet in the Whitebark Lounge at the Westin Monache Resort, our host hotel.  This was the formal kickoff of the High Alpine Tour and gave participants the opportunity to meet PCA members from other regions. With the increasing car count, it was extremely crowded but all had a chance to catchup with a number of PCAers they had met from past tours.

Saturday was warm and sunny with breakfast at the Base Camp Café on Main Street. Display parking for over 70 cars was set aside for tour members but, with almost 90 cars, side lots had to be used.  After a hearty breakfast, a drivers' meeting outlined the premier event of the weekend - the Loop Drive! Because of the number of cars, we decided to break into four groups: vintage, scenic, intermediate and spirited. The drive is about two hours with a short stop at the Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining.  It includes the scenic drive on the June Lake Loop as well as a spirited drive on CA 120 East and Benton Crossing Road. The "Benton Crossing Loop" traverses parts of the Long Valley Caldera, canyons and ridges near Crowley Lake, whoop-de-doos on the eastern side of CA 120 and the back side of the Mono Craters and Mono Lake itself.  After the drive lunch at The Eatery included lots of excited chatter about the fabulous morning drive!  After lunch, about half the group drove up to the "Lakes Basin" on the other side of Mammoth. Here members had a chance to view Twin Lakes from above or take in the scenic views of Lake Mamie and the surrounding mountains.

The other special event of the weekend is the display of cars at The Village. This year we were again limited to 20 cars, on a first-come basis, for this unique exhibition on the walkways of the pedestrian-only Village.   As usual large crowds wandered among and admired the Porsches and talked to the owners. Multiple restaurants in and around The Village provided everyone with a choice for dinner and a beautiful evening to complement a fantastic day!

Sunday was another beautiful day and plans for the day included: Early departures home; day trips to Yosemite; gondola rides to the top of Mammoth Mountain: visits to the Minaret Vista providing spectacular views of the spires of the Ritter Range of Eastern Sierras; drives to Devils Post Pile; and a leisurely stay-over to shop and enjoy the beauty of the area.  By early afternoon most were on their way home and setting aside the dates for 2017.

On the Track:

Introduction: The racing calendar of the IMSA SportsCar Championship is keeping drivers and teams running at high revs: Just one week after a disappointing performance at the six-hour race at Watkins Glen, Porsche headed north with North America's premier sports car racing series to Bowmanville not far from Toronto today for the only race in Canada. The Porsche North America factory squad tackled the race in the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park as the defending champions with two Porsche 911 RSRs in the GTLM class - which with five automobile manufacturers has the strongest support and is the most competitive.  The new Ford GT and BMW dominated last weeks race.

The Track: The first sports car race on the previous Mosport International Raceway, Canada's oldest racetrack, was contested in 1961. Stirling Moss won the inaugural race in a Lotus 19. The Canadian Formula 1 Grands Prix were held here on the storied 2.48 mile (3.957 kilometers) circuit from 1967 to 1977. In the races of the American Le Mans Series and its successor series the IMSA SportsCar Championship, Porsche has celebrated a total of eight GT victories since 1999.

Qualifying:  In the GTLM class, it was all USA with Corvette on the pole and the Ford GT in second and third.  The two 911 RSRs campaigned by the Porsche North America works team finished the qualifying on eighth and ninth.
Driver quotes:  Nick Tandy (911 RSR #911): "We took a risk with the choice of tires in the hope that we are stronger in the race tomorrow. I hope it works out."
Earl Bamber (911 RSR #912): "I drove a good qualifying lap, perhaps one of the best I've ever driven. I really tried everything. There's simply nothing you can say about such an outcome."

In the GTD class, the Porsche 911 GT3 R fielded by the Seattle/Alex Job Racing team took the pole position.  The two other GT3s qualified 5th and 13th
Driver quote:  Alex Riberas (911 GT3 R #23): "To be honest, we didn't expect to claim pole. . . . Now we have the best starting position for the race and just one goal: we want to win."

#912 Bamber &Makowiecki RSR
The Race: As with qualifying, it was all Ford, Corvette, and BMW at the front of the pack.  The #912 and #911 Porsche 911 RSRs finished 6th and 8th in the GTLM class with the #912 having run as high as 2nd. However, in the final phase of the race they were unable to defend this position against the leaders. Porsche currently ranks third in the Manufacturers' Class.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R of Team Seattle/Alex Job Racing tackled the 2.40-hour race from pole position and held the lead (except for short periods after pit stops) up to one hour to the flag when the GT3 R lost a wheel and retired from the race.  The Park Place Motorsports with works driver Jörg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Lindsey (USA) finished in 6th place.
