July 27 (Friday): Beat the Heat Drive and Lunch
As all mornings seem to be this time of year, it was HOT! So . . . a small bunch of us met at the IHOP on Cheyenne at 9:00 am. After a brief driver's meeting, signing the waiver and the usual discussion of the heat and would it spoil the rhubarb, we were off by 9:30.
We had four Porsches - - - three 911s and a Panamera. The people that attended included:
Paul and Val Croxton
Mike and Virg Rockelman
We left 112° Las Vegas and stopped at the Mt. Charleston Lodge, where it was a refreshing 77°, for a quick soft drink and the requisite group selfie.
Then we went across the mountain to the Ski Lift, took a break and a good view. Took some pictures with the Club flag.
Then we dropped back into the heat for lunch at the Pauite Golf Resort. 112° again!!
We finished and parted Pauite at 3:00pm.
All had a good time and enjoyed the cooler weather for an all too brief period.
August 2 - 6 (Thursday-Monday): State Park Expedition Grande Finale is underway. Look for a complete report in the August 19 edition.
September 12-15: Treffen Banff is SOLD OUT
Drive, dine, and explore in Canada's Banff National Park during the upcoming Treffen North America. Registration opened June 13 and sold out quickly.
September 27 - 30: Rennsport Reunion VI
The four-day "family reunion" takes place September 27-30 at legendary WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, California. Posters for past Rennsport Reunions quickly became collector's items.
Nearly 60,000 people came to Laguna Seca for the previous Rennsport Reunion in 2015. It is the world's largest gathering of vintage and contemporary Porsche race cars, those who have driven and engineered them, and fans. Hosted by PCNA, Rennsport Reunion VI will again feature the widest variety of historic racing models in competition as Porsche celebrates the 70th anniversary this year of its first sports car.
This year's event will honor the full pantheon of Porsche motorsport champions, and the poster depicts three of the most significant players: the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring-winning Type 718 RS 60, the first overall endurance race winner from Porsche; the 2008 RS Spyder which famously punched above its weight by winning races overall in the American Le Mans Series in the Le Mans Prototype (LMP2) class; and the 959 Group B rally car, which after winning the grueling 6,200 mile Paris-Dakar off-road rally in 1986 went on to become the world's fastest production street-legal road car.
September 29-30: RennRun 2018
Not going to Monterey for Rennsport Reunion VI?. Well, we have an alternative for you. RennRun is a gathering of 996 enthusiasts from across the Nation, as well as a weekend to celebrate the car we love - the Porsche 911. We welcome all Porsche cars to share the road with us and take an opportunity to get to know the first water-cooled 911. The event is free to attend, we will be kicking off at the Cars & Coffee show at SpeedVegas on the 29th, and we will be starting bright and early at Cars und Kaffee at Vesta Coffee on the 30th. Group drives, activities, and group meals listed below will be optional, at participant's cost. This is not a PCA or local region sanctioned event. We won't put numbers and stickers on our cars, or anything like that. It will just be a chance for Porsches and friends old, and new, to meet up.
The event is being planned by members of www.996Outpost.com, with the help of members of www.Rennlist.com, so it is largely social in nature. It's an opportunity for Porsche fans that are used to communicating long-distance to get together and chat face-to-face for a change. Suffice it to say, it's difficult to leave the RennRun without making a lot of new friends!

Before we go . . . Escaping the heat
Y0ur editor and family couldn't join the drive to Mount Charleston to escape the Las Vegas valley heat, but that didn't prevent us from taking a couple of weeks off to beat the heat. We headed south, way south, to Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand where the temps were consistently between 40° and 60°. It was wonderful. We saw many Porsches on the streets of Sydney, Hobart, and Auckland. A few 911s and Panameras were spotted, but at least 80% of the P-cars we saw were Macans and Cayennes. This week's title picture is a 912 in a museum in Hamilton, New Zealand. Here are a few more pictures of that right-hand drive Porsche from various angles (along with a mini dragster):
