Sunday Salad- Car Nut and Porsches

What happened at the September Brunch and will happen in October
Sunday September 11th was a beautiful day. Weather- a bit cool- only in the low 100s. But really sunny- break from the “monsoon” rains. With summer over for many, it was time to get back to semi-normal.
We gathered in the window-lined dining room Of Red Rock Country Club to greet each other over micro-sized cups of hot coffee. There were many familiar and getting-to-be-familiar faces gathering, as the brunch is becoming a must-do event each month.
We settled down to the highlight of the morning- delicious food. After that President Reid Smith greeted the awaiting crowd with news of upcoming events- a drive to California on twisty backroads, a nudge to enter your car in the next week’s AutoFest car show to be held at Red Rock Country Club grounds and the clubs fall DE (Drivers Education) event at Spring Mountain Race Track.
As the main event of the morning, Michael Dugan Introduced Phil Reese- an acknowledged car nut and long standing PCA member (and a member of PCA National staff for a number of years). Phil has owned Porsches for a good deal of his adult life. But his initial love was building and racing drag racers (with his brother). So many of us thought that all thing automotive were exclusively born and bred in SoCal. Not quite so- Baltimore had the Reese brothers who raced against the best from the west. Phil related that his first Porsche love was a blue mid-50s 356. At the last minute he had a friend who actually knew what a Porsche was, take a look at the car. He lifted the driver’s side carpet and was struck by the cleanliness of the pavement below. Actually, you could have had a similar road vista from anywhere below the carpeting. Per Phil, his blue 356 Porsche jilted him- he had to say good-bye. Eventually Phil swapped quickly driving in a straight line for heading for the twisty country roads.
Join us at next Brunch on October 9th at Red Rock Country Club, 2250 Red Springs Drive, 10 am as per usual. Our speaker will be David Soyk. He is a former racer and now a sales consultant-extrordinaire for Gaudin Porsche. He will be talking about buying a used Porsche (maybe he should have hooked up with Phil years ago). Many of us have bought used cars- holding our breath hoping we didn’t miss some major flaw (like no floor pans). Well David has the car for you……..
To register, go to http://msreg.com/October-Brunch The cost will be $20 per person. Registration will close at 4pm on October 6th, the Thursday before the event. If you don’t register on line, you may show up on Sunday but the cost will be $30 per person, payable in cash if seating is available.
