From the Archives #13, March 2023

We’ve spent most of the last year reviewing our Region’s first year, 1974. Once we jumped ahead ten years to look at 1985, only to discover that poor attendance at Las Vegas Region events was the primary topic in most of that year’s newsletters.

Now let’s take a look at …April 1995. The big event was the opening of the Las Vegas Speedway Park, now known as Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Our LVR held a track event, in coordination with the Porsche Owners Club (POC). The new twist was that they did actual wheel-to-wheel Porsche racing on the brand new road race course. They held two races on Saturday and one on Sunday, and all apparently went well. They were described as “good clean racing and intense competition.”

In the May 1995 issue of Sandscript, there was an article about a product offering that looked really good pre-internet (yes, 1995, barely 30 years ago, was before the internet became even a faint shadow of the power and capability it now has). The President of the Monterey Bay Region of PCA offered a publication called “The Directory.” It was a resource catalog of where to get Porsche parts. It had the sources listed four different ways: 1) an alphabetical list of suppliers; 2) a list of car parts by model 356 through 944; 3) A list by general parts category (e.g., A/C, interiors, electrics, etc.); 4) a geographical list of suppliers. The Directory listed 685 sources, and cost $24.95. I’d include here the address at which you could buy one, but I’m told they’re no longer available.

Also in 1995, the Sandscript won third place in the newsletter competition at the Porsche Parade in the small region category. The Region management was justifiably proud.

We’ve been writing these “From the Archives” for a year now, describing events and activities from our Region’s first year, with a couple of jumps to more recent (but still old) times, and sometimes trying to inject a little light humor into the old-timey history. But we’ve had no feedback whatsoever, indicating what just may be a lack of interest in what our predecessors did in the Las Vegas Region in years past. So let’s do this. If you like these articles from our Region’s past, send me a very brief note at philreese356@gmail.com. If I get even two “likes,” we keep going with “From the Archives.” Otherwise not.
