Our Summer 2023 Porsche Sojourn

By Martha and Randy Burba

We decided, before exploring Porsche ownership, that these cars would be everyday drivers and more. This summer we embarked on one of those “and more” odysseys as we hit the road for 28 days in our 2011 Panamera 4S. A quick shout out to Todd and Trophy Performance, who were happy to provide a pre-trip oil change and inspection. Given the green light that the car was good to make the 9200-mile round trip, we departed early on July 20. The air conditioning worked flawlessly as we headed north and east into Colorado. We never had a temperature over 85 the rest of the trip. We had unwittingly escaped the record heatwave affecting the southwest; a blessing to be sure.

During the next 28 days we visited two countries, over 20 states, and one island (Prince Edward Island). We visited many old friends along the way and made several new ones. I took a few pictures of the car along the journey, which I’ve included below.  The Panamera, dubbed, Cigar1, was comfortable and competent no matter what we threw at it. During one stint in rural Vermont, a major accident caused a very circuitous detour that had us essentially off roading and having to inch by oncoming semis on a narrow shoulder that was essentially a resident’s private property. All in all, quite an adventure. Niagara Falls are quite the sight from the Canadian side, food in Quebec was phenomenal, eating buffalo wings in the bar where they were invented was fun. The mountains of Vermont, the beaches in Maine, and the lakes and streams along the way were all reminders of how wonderful the varying American landscape is. And just how much fun driving the backroads can be, particularly in a Porsche!

It is my hope that sharing this brief summary of our summer drive will resonate with those who love driving their Porsches and maybe influence those considering venturing further out. To steal the age-old Nike slogan, Just Do It!  You’ll be glad you did, and the smiles will prove it.
