In 1996 I ordered a brand-new Porsche Boxster while living in the SF Bay Area. I was lucky to break with family history to own a P-Car. My Mother admitted more recently that my father, who was a big car and motorbike guy always wanted a P-car, but all she had to say was, do you really need that? That was the end of that discussion. I waited 13 months to take delivery of that car from Rector Motors, but the good news was the Boxster saved Porsche according to experts, and I went on to have a couple more.

Somehow, while living there I never joined the Porsche Club of America, but I did get hooked on going to the track after attending the Skip Barber 3-day SCCA racing school at Laguna Seca. Several years later I ended up as a West Coast guy living in Metro New York City. When it came time to go to the track, one of the best ways was to join PCA and start attending PCA High Performance Drivers Education events, just like the ones LVR puts on a couple times a year. NY Metro and surrounding area being as densely populated, there were 4 PCA chapters nearby and there were lots of Porsche enthusiasts going to the track on the regular. It also was a great way to meet people in my new community, and I took full advantage through car culture and Porsche racecars, in particular, playing a big role in my connections to the area.

Late last year anticipating retirement and planning to return to my roots out West I scouted around and finally decided Las Vegas had the most to offer. I didn’t do a full background check on the PCA club locally, but I did determine there was a pretty nice track out at Spring Mountain and weather to get on the road and track year-round. The first social call I made outside connecting with some longtime friends from the Pacific Northwest was to the PCA website.

Having been a member since 2008 I was aware of how the PCA worked, but I was unprepared for the level of engagement from the LVR club and its leaders and members. Sunday brunch was followed by Meet and Greet, followed by participation at Autofest at Red Rock Country Club, followed by Cars und Kaffe in the Arts District, and on it went. That was in my first month as a member.
