Meet The Members – Ken and Betty Hollman

Hi, my name is Ken Hollman and I am addicted to Porsches.

This began in 1972 when I purchased by first Porsche, a 1965 912 (s/n 010), and since we had a mortgage and two small girls in our young family, we could not afford.  This was my daily driver for about three years and as things do, practicality caused me to trade it for a Chevy pickup.  I fought the addiction for about 25 years when another 912 came home with me.  This one required renovation, most of which I did myself over the next several years.  At this point, the urge to compete overwhelmed my better sense and I auto-crossed this car for a couple years.  Wanting better lap times, a 914 followed me home, also requiring a complete makeover.  This car became competitive in local SCCA and PCA events with my wife, Betty, earning the SSCA women’s class championship, two years running.  From here, the sickness grew.  1956 356A entered and became our vintage racecar.  I frequently raced this car on most of the west coast tracks from San Diego to Seattle.  With my cravings never satisfied, another couple of 356’s and a Carrera consumed my spare time (and our money).

Our life in the Porsche community took hold in the mid 1990’s.  Betty and I were very active in the Sierra Nevada Region and began volunteering to help out.  Funny how being membership chair for me and activities chair for Betty lead both of us to become Sierra Nevada Region presidents.  The process took many years and a long the way we made many great friends and enjoyed club events in the Reno area until about 2010.  At this time, we began to consider retirement and travel.  We also thought it might be nice to escape the snow of the Sierra Nevada’s and move to the desert, which is how we found our way to southern Utah.  During that process, we sold most all of the cars, (due to a successful rehab) and did what a lot of folks do, down sized for a simpler existence.  I should point out that we did keep the second 912 and brought it with us to Utah.  However, we found no Porsche interest here and after a few years, the 912 was sold and went to Australia.  At this juncture, we thought we had retired that chapter of our lives.

We were happy to enjoy our other passions of bicycling, Jeeping and travel, until one evening we were at a fund raiser for a local bicycle group and ran into Craig and Di Shanklin.  They just happened to the southern Utah representative for the Intermountain Region.  We discovered that there was in fact, an active Porsche club in southern Utah but now had no car.  My old addiction came back stronger than ever and we purchased a 2017 911S in the spring of 2023.  Late last year, we were part of the group that moved from Intermountain to Las Vegas Region.  So now, we’re actively involved with club again and our lives are busier than ever.  My addiction is being fed and we have all ready made a lot of great friends and are enjoying club activates once again.
