From the Archives #21, December 2023
In our Region’s middle-age, in 2002, Ed Pacini was the President. He was the LVR’s 19th President by individual, and 29th by year. Our Region had almost 200 members at the time.
Ed died at 90 last month. He had been still sort of active in the Porsche world, having bought a new Macan just two years ago; it was black, and he had it custom pin-striped with red. And he was a member of the POT.
So I thought I’d look back at Ed’s Presidential year and report some interesting happenings under Ed’s guidance. First, you have to realize Ed took over the Region leadership just three months after the horrible events of September 11, 2001. Against this background it looks like Ed rallied the Region quite well. To quote from his “President’s Corner” in the Jan 2002 Sandscript: “It could be argued that activities like car clubs are frivolous in a post 9/11 world. I disagree; the very fact that we enjoy the freedom to pursue such ‘frivolities’ speaks volumes to the benefits of living in a free society.”
Some highlights: In January 2002, Ed had the Superbowl (an occasionally important football game) pushed back to February so the Region could hold its January meeting without unnecessary interference;
In mid-April the LVR staged its second Zone 8 event, one that included the second-ever Zone concours on Fremont St. The Zone 8 Rep at the time said that he had never experienced so much public interest in a Porsche concours. Ed talked Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman into presenting the “Mayor’s Choice” the “Oscar’s Oscar.” Nina Cooper was the winner.
In October, he led the Region’s charity autocross for the benefit of the Las Vegas Injured Police Officers’ fund. It had over 70 entries and apparently did well financially for the Police Fund.
Overall for the year, Ed led a very active LVR, holding twelve sizeable events, including LVR’s second Zone 8 weekend, a pig roast, a tech session, a charity autocross, and at least three drives.
We’ve included a few photos over the years in the Remembrance section in this issue of Desert Drives.
