BID NERDS

Gary Lea

What on earth is he off about now. What kind of Nerds??

Well it isn’t as odd as it seems. What it isn’t is a bunch of goofy guys with pocket protectors. Glasses held together in the middle with white medical tape. And no protractors or slide rules.

Bid Nerds is a fun YouTube channel game that takes place every Wednesday and Sunday evening start time officially at 6:30, but most times 10-15 minutes late.

The purpose of the show is to preview a a number of cars that are currently listed on the main auction sites. The sites that dominate are Bring a Trailer, Cars and Bids, PCARMARKET and occasionally Hemmings and Hagerty. Two hosts and often times a guest host set in between the main hosts. The hosts present a bevy of cars, give the pertinent info on the vehicles along with rather hilarious color (generally blue) commentary on the vehicles being presented. I have never heard the term “clutching of pearls” so much and had never hear of pictures being referred to as “assets” before.  The again I am in my seventies and not up and up on the younger verbiage being bandied about.

I try to never miss an episodes and the attendants are affectionately referred to as the “NERD HERD” which I am now a regular and honorable nerd to the core.

After the presentation of each car, along with the Host’s bids, the game is to guess what the car will hammer for. Everyone throws out a bid they think it will end at. If you hit the nail on the head with your bid you are awarded a “Yahtzee”. I am proud to say I have two Yahtzees and two “Closest To The Pin” awards. Needless to say these are highly prized and give the player certain status and very minor bragging rights. It is also worth noting that it is not easy to get a Yahtzee.

The “Herd” are some of the most welcoming and fun people to hang out with. Lots a great conversation in the comments which is all the Herd and often times side conversations about all things cars and some great advice about buying cars in the internet. Also generally speaking the Herd are better bidders than the hosts, not always but enough to make it really fun.

If you are looking for a bit of fun with a great group of people who share the car passion this might be the place to be for an hour on Sunday and Wednesday evenings.
