THE JUST ONE PROJECT VOLUNTEER DAY

On Tuesday, October 14th, a group of us from the board arrived at The Just One Project at 7:30 a.m. at 1401 N. Decatur Blvd. Bright-eyed and eager to help distribute food to those in need, we set out to make a difference.

We had been aligned with this group since the beginning of the year and had mentioned them in these pages a few times. They are truly remarkable in their efforts to feed those in need. In addition to food distribution, they also offer housing assistance, job training, and placement assistance. Their dedication is evident in the fact that they distribute over 6 MILLION pounds of food annually to the community.

When we arrived at the distribution line on Tuesday morning. It was a well-organized and efficiently run operation. Cars lined up in a drive-through area, and as they checked in, their car windshields were coded with the food they were scheduled to receive. These coded cars then drove through a line to receive a box or boxes, each containing food for the week.

Three of us worked on the box assembly line carefully placing the items in the boxes. Others were responsible for delivering the food to the cars. It was an impressive sight to witness the well-oiled machine that was running smoothly from start to finish.

I had the pleasure of working the box filling line alongside Reid and Dana Smith. We worked tirelessly throughout the morning and had a great time.

Ed Hanford, Mark Coronado, Jordan Godorov, and Marnie Cameron (our charity coordinator) were the ones actually distributing the food to the cars. Each person had a designated spot and duty, and everyone performed admirably for a first-time crew. I couldn’t help but start calling Jordan the “Milkman”! (Can you guess what he did?)

The cars were lined up around the block a few times, and the distribution didn’t end until a bit after 11:00 a.m. It was an incredible experience to be a part of, and I am certain that we will continue to participate in Volunteer Days there. We will also raise money and organize food drives to support their efforts. We are truly blessed to have them in Las Vegas.
