Long time member and Past President of LVRPCA Ed Pasini passed away on Oct 5 of this year just 6 weeks before his 91st birthday. He is survived by his sister, Janet, son Barry and his wife Katy.

Born and raised in the Los Angeles, he graduated from USC with a degree in Accounting and upon retirement in 1997 wisely relocated to Las Vegas.

Ed was very definitely a “CAR GUY”. His career focused on auto dealerships. The renowned Longo Toyota dealership was a customer. When Mr. Longo passed away his family wanted to sell the business. Ed was part to the team that sold it to Roger Penske. Longo Toyota [...]

The holiday season is here! If you haven’t put those decorations up yet, I’m sure it’s on your short list. During the month of December, we usually do not offer as many club activities because it seems like many of us are busy with family and other commitments during the holiday season.

The new year will include the Phoenix Fun Run Tour, which take place January 12-14th. It will include a unique Cars and Coffee social, a day drive through the Sonoran Desert and a visit to an incredible Secret European Car Collection.

Our Winter Gala will take place at the M Resort and Casino January 21st. It will be a wonderful evening to kick off our Las Vegas Region 50th Anniversary celebration year. We are excited to have Vu Nguyen, PCA Executive Director, as special guest speaker. We will have a big birthday party for our 50th anniversary on April 20th, the day of [...]

From the Archives #20, November 2023

In the spring of 1980, our young Region held an autocross (today we’d probably call it a time trial). In June, they congratulated themselves for the success of the event. Among other good things, about 40% of the Region membership turned out to help and work the event. Imagine if 40% of today’s members worked an HPDE event at Spring Mountain. That would mean we would have about 350 track workers. We could have a flag person stationed about every 50 feet around the track. We can dream on…..

Additionally, they had five large sponsors for the event, allowing the LVR to have the lowest entry fee of any Zone 8 Time Trial and still make a little money. Unfortunately, they forgot to include one of the five sponsor’s name on the written materials given to the participants. They acknowledged the big OOPs and apologized in the newsletter.

The [...]

While my High School classmates in the 70’s were buying used Mustangs or Camaros as their first car mine was a Red 1966 Volkswagen Beetle 1300. 50HP of fun and simple enough to fix most anything that broke. Later I “upgraded” to a 1972 Super Beetle, all of 15HP increase but it was yellow so that made it faster. I have been hooked on German cars since.

I favor older cars and  have owned a number of Audi’s, Mercedes, and Porsche’s over the years. Not a collector, never had the money or room, more that I get bored and changed cars often. The only new car I purchased was a 2000 Audi TT taking delivery of one of the first cars to reach the US. Not the fastest but very nimble and turned heads when it first launched. It was my daily driver for a number of years.

My first “weekend car” [...]

PORSCHES AND PASTRIES AT TUACAHN A HIT!

By Reid Smith

We had perfect weather for Porsches and Pastries at the scenic Tuacahn Street Market on October 21st. Dozens of Porsche owners from Southern Utah and Las Vegas were in attendance this special morning. Gaudin Porsche pulled out the stops with a harvest display complete with a Porsche tractor driven by Gaudin General Manager Paul Jarrett plowing through the parking lot like it was the south forty! They also sprung for German pastries for all.

A special thanks to Craig and Di Shanklin for organizing such a fun event. Their leadership and expert Southern Utah crew made this outing a great success!

We decided, before exploring Porsche ownership, that these cars would be everyday drivers and more. This summer we embarked on one of those “and more” odysseys as we hit the road for 28 days in our 2011 Panamera 4S. A quick shout out to Todd and Trophy Performance, who were happy to provide a pre-trip oil change and inspection. Given the green light that the car was good to make the 9200-mile round trip, we departed early on July 20. The air conditioning worked flawlessly as we headed north and east into Colorado. We never had a temperature over 85 the rest of the trip. We had unwittingly escaped the record heatwave affecting the southwest; a blessing to be sure.

FANTASTIC PRESENTATION and DINNER!

D’AGOSTINO’S TRATTORIA

By Reid Smith

What a time we had with chef Dan at his fine restaurant on October 16th! I’ll have to admit I would have never ordered Eggplant Parmigiana off a menu at a fine restaurant until that night. Chef Dan gave a master class in how to properly prepare and present this fabulous dish. Chef also included facts about how Italian food and wine are different from region to region, along with what sides and appetizers compliment the dinner. A big thank you to Barbara Barron for coordinating this wonderful event!
