There were lots of ooo’s and aaaah’s on our tour of the Maloof car collection on October 15th. The 104 cars on display are housed in at least a half dozen garages in the complex. Not only were there many unique autos on display, but the walls are covered with memorabilia. Old movies and car posters. Everyone was saying how interesting the collection is with almost all of the cars are in original condition.

The only drawback was we could only have 25 attendees, so we are working on plans to offer another chance to see this incredible collection after the first of the year. Stay tuned.

A big thank you to Danny Barnett for your willingness and knowledge in guiding us through the tour!

Fall and Spring are typically our busiest time of the year for club activities and this year has been no exception. I really enjoy seeing the increasingly large turnouts and interest in our club. In just the third week of October we had the Maloof Collection Tour, Chef Dan’s cooking presentation at D’Agostino’s Trattoria, and the Tuacahn Cars and Coffee in Southern Utah! Each one was a hit with our members.

Because the Maloof Collection Tour was limited to 25 attendees, I am planning to work with them to have another tour in February. I’ll keep you posted.

Looking to the future, we have our last High Performance Driver’s Education weekend November 3rd-5th. We will offer four run groups from beginning to advanced. Check out the details in this issue.

Our Mix & Mingle social gatherings have been quite successful. Our strategy has been to pick interesting establishments at various locations around town. The November [...]

From the Archives #19, October 2023

I thought we might jump ahead a few years to 1980, when our Region was seven years old. The Sandscript has been enlarged to a full 8 ½” x 11” size, from the 7” x 8 ½” they started with.

The kickoff article in January, 1980 was a report of the December Board meeting. It seems that the Las Vegas Region, for unexplained reasons, had proposed at the Zone Presidents’ meeting that the Zone 8 rep be a competitively-elected position instead of an appointed one. I’ll leave it to you speculate why they did this, but a hint might be that Carl Young was the LVR President at the time.

Well, LVR got turned down flat. Then our Region sent a letter to Chuck Stoddard, whom I believe was PCA National President at the time. That apparently went nowhere as well.

In other news from early 1980, the Board [...]

As you’ve probably seen from the gazillion pics on the socials, RR7 was nothing short of legendary. But let me tell you, the most epic part was getting there.

Eight dudes, eight Porsches, a mix ranging from a 991.2 GT3RS to a vintage ’78 930, setting off on a 600-mile road trip. Now, you don’t need a crystal ball to know that this plan was destined for unplanned detours. It was just a matter of when and how.

The grand plan? Oh, it waved goodbye the moment we rolled out of the parking lot a solid two hours behind schedule. Chaos ensued. Some cars up front hit the gas station pit stop, while the eager beavers behind missed the memo and zoomed on. Result? We were scattered like confetti.

Then, darkness crept in just as we hit those twisty roads we’d been salivating over. H4 headlights did their best, but it was more like mood [...]

Do you know the perfect time to visit Yosemite National Park? Right after Labor Day! It was not overly crowded, with plenty of parking at the viewpoints and in the valley. The weather was fabulous – not to hot – not too cold – all sunshine. On our way we stopped at the Pinion Picnic area in the Ancient Bristlecone Pines National Recreation Area for a high altitude picnic. We spent two nights in Mammoth Lakes which gave us time to visit some of the sites close in town. The second day was spent enjoying the incredible sights in Yosemite.

On our third day, we descended on the thriving metropolis of Tonopah. The Central Nevada Museum was an excellent stop in town. After good BBQ at the Tonopah Brewery, we crashed the Mizpah Hotel Bar for a nightcap and socializing.

We need to do this tour again!

Jim Roal joined the PCA in 2004 shortly after buying his first Porsche, a 1987 944S.  About a year later he met the president of the Lincoln Trail PCA (the region where he lived at the time) and mentioned that the website was out-of-date.  On the spot the president made him the webmaster for the region.  During the time Jim was in Illinois and part of the Lincoln Trail region, he held various positions including webmaster, newsletter editor, vice president, and membership chair.

Jim enjoys HPDE.  He drove his first HPDE with the Chicago Region PCA at Blackhawk Farms in Illinois in 2005.  He was hooked and has been attending HPDE about once a year ever since.

Jim and his wife bought a home in Las Vegas in 2020 but kept the Cayman S at their Illinois home until they sold that home in 2022 and brought the Cayman S to Las Vegas and transferred [...]
