September 2022
In the 1994 movie Endless Summer II, director Bruce Brown follows another pair of lucky surfers around the globe in search of the perfect wave. At just about every location the protagonists encounter local surfers to get acquainted with the area as well as the culture. One mantra keeps repeating itself throughout the film no matter how epic or mellow the surf is in each of the different short vignettes; “The stoke is the same”. This take was used to describe young kids riding perfect tubes over dangerous reefs, experienced surfers riding specialized-boards called “guns” while being towed into 60’+ waves or a couple of old Boomers paddling out onto Lake Michigan in Chicago on long boards to ride a gentle wave back to shore. The films’ narrator reminds us time and time again; “the stoke is the same”.
I always loved that nugget from the film. For years I felt it has given me permission [...]

We’ve decided to take a short break from relating the Las Vegas Region’s past from fifty years ago, and instead jump to a time only fifteen years ago… 2007 (BTW, how can 2007 be 15 years ago? It was just yesterday.)
The newsletter, Sandscript, announced that after a two-year wait, the Las Vegas Region polo shirts were in hand and ready for sale. Only $20 each, with a pocket in front and the Region’s logo on the back. (We don’t have Region shirts any more, do we?)
AND, …..2007 was the year that the “Team Porsche” demolished the competition for the fifth consecutive time in the open-road race (ORR) called the Pony Express 130. As it was run in 2007, this was an 83-mile ORR (yes, 83 miles of open road racing, right here in Nevada). On State Rt. 305 (look it up), traffic is halted, and a legal [...]

We’re going to call December 1974 the last month of our Region’s first year, even though it had been chartered for only nine months. We’re doing this because they started 1975 with new officers (Paul Riley, President; Carl Young, VP), and a new-look newsletter numbered Vol II No. 1.
So…. Our predecessors had quite a start. They put a lot of emphasis on “autocrosses/time trials.” They held events at (can you believe this?): Ontario Motor Speedway, Willow Springs, Riverside Raceway, the Las Vegas Convention Center, Holtville, and the Las Vegas Speedrome. At least three of these six sites no longer exist and the Convention Center parking lot isn’t available today (well, it’s available, but other folks are using it all the time.)
They held tech sessions, enjoyed dinners, happy hours, picnics, and pool parties.
They organized and participated in rallies, although the type of rally isn’t known.
They held [...]

Describe your first Porsche. How many have you owned?
Our first Porsche was a 2017 Panamera. It is absolutely one of the best vehicles we have ever owned. The Panamera is what “sealed the deal” for us to be a Porsche family. Since then, we have owned 5 Porsches. We had a 911 and a Cayenne along the way. At one time, there was 4 Porsches in the fleet.
What Porsche do you own? What do you like about it? Any enhancements or modifications?
We currently have a 2017 Macan Base in black and a 2021 Taycan 4 Cross Turismo in neptune blue.
The Macan is our “grocery getter” and travel vehicle for when we go places where it is difficult to park or navigate. The Macan is great on the freeways in California & for parking in tight spaces near the beach. The Macan is like driving a go-cart. Even though it’s a base [...]

From the President’s Desk,
I hope everyone is enjoying our Las Vegas “dry heat”. Of course, those of you who are reading this from cooler temperatures are chuckling! We are looking forward to YOUR migration back to Las Vegas.
It gives me great sadness to report that two of our beloved members, Donald Goldberg and Carol “Cookie” Scanlon-Goldberg, died in a tragic plane crash at the North Las Vegas Airport. Barbara Barron, our VP and I had a nice visit with them at July’s brunch. They were so excited to fly their Piper to Couer d”Alene Idaho that week. Both were experienced pilots and flew extensively. I asked Cookie if she and Donald would be interested in being featured in the September issue of Desert Drives “Meet the Members”. She was excited about sharing some photos of her own plane and her matching Porsche. They were such a lovely couple and will be sorely missed.
